Junior Hockey Club
Welcome to Abbeyleix Junior Hockey Our base is the Astroturf (7 a –side pitch) in Fr Breen Park, Abbeyleix Field teams at u-10, u-12, u-14 & u-16 level (Boys included in teams) Club Colours are Red Tops & Hoodies with black shorts and red socks.
Club Coaching: Declan Stanley, Anne Cantwell & Michael Rafter
Training times are on Sunday mornings as follows: Under -10 & Under -12 @10.00 am Under 14 & under 16 @11.00 am September to May excluding bank Holidays and Christmas break
We are in existence since Oct 2005 when a group of not more than a dozen started playing on the newly constructed 7- a- side Astroturf pitch in Fr Breen Park in Abbeyleix. We inherited some hockey sticks from the original Portlaoise Junior Hockey club (courtesy of Petronella Ryan), which had not been active for a number of years. Former 
Portlaoise player and Abbeyleix resident Jane Whelan sponsored the purchase of some balls and we were up & running. First club action was in Kilkenny in 2006 followed by various blitzes in Enniscorthy, Kilkenny, Tullamore, Newbridge and the very enjoyable u-12 all – Ireland festival in UCD in 2008. First success came in 2008/2009 winning the u-14 Hockey West Leinster Shield in Newbridge. 2009/2010 was best season so far winning the u16 West Leinster League and runners up in the Cup competition for u14 & u16s, and success in blitzes for u10s, u12’s. We would like to play more friendly games, and look forward to hearing from other clubs. Our homes is still the 7 a-side Astro turf, but play our matches on Portlaoise Senior Clubs pitch by kind permission of Portlaoise Rugby Club.
